Can you help..going to the ballet Swan Lake..applauding?

i have always had a secret dream to see the ballet..Swan Lake..so graceful %26amp; i am mesmerized by the beauty and skill of the dance - and now..my husband has treated me to actually go to london and see it in june...at the Royal Albert Hall...i am SO excited about it.

however...i am worried - do we applaud after an act - like you do in a musical? or is the clapping at the end? i'd like to know before i go...dont want to look like a dummy!! - thank you to anyone who can advise...and please..if you dont like the ballet - no nasty comments.

plus....what do you wear? i know jeans are not ok - is a trouser suit (smart) ok?...nerves are already setting in and its 2 months away!

You can always applaud for a solo or pas de deux, and it is fine to applaud at the end of the act (just like in musicals). Like others have said...follow the audience, they will applaud when appropriate.

Dress up, it will make you feel magical along with a magical night at the ballet. Many women will wear nice evening dresses. A smart suit will be appropriate also. Gentlemen should wear a tie, and a jacket would look very nice.

Soak up the evening and all it entails! You will feel beautiful and will enjoy a beautiful ballet!. Also, if you tend to cry at a sad story, bring a nice hanky to dry your eyes.

Just wait and see what the audience does. Follow their lead. Have fun!
clap if you want to, but no dancing in the aisles.
You can applaud after an act, or even after an especially wonderful solo. And I agree with the other poster who said follow the lead of the audience; just clap when they do. A very chic trouser suit is fine, when in doubt, wear black!
I agree with Heart about how to dress.

About the applause, Ballet is less rigid than going to a Concert where you have to wait until the end of the piece. Generally people applaud after a solo, pas de deux and even after a wonderful corps de ballet moment. Even some times they applaud before as with the fouettees (32 turn done in just one leg) of the black swan in act two.

You will love it, it is my favourite Ballet it never ever tires me!

Have fun, fun, fun and then tell us how it went! ;-)
You'll know when to applaud... it'll just feel right, plus there will be 100's of people there, so if you're not sure, just follow their lead!

As for what to wear maybe check your tickets first. If there is a Dress Code, ie Evening dress, it will be mentioned on the ticket. Dress up but wear something you will feel comfortable in, as you will be sitting for quite a while. Wear trousers or skirt and a nice top, a trouser suit may feel a bit too formal. But most of all just enjoy the experience, don't worry too much about what other people are doing or wearing.

Enjoy Swan Lake, it is a beautiful Ballet and if your husband enjoys it too, try and persuade to him to watch some modern works at the Royal Opera House as well!
