What stretches can I do for ballet? How can I get the full way down for the splits, too?

I am thirteen years old and have never danced/done ballet, but I have alright flexability. I am starting ballet lessons in a little while, but what stretches can I do before I start, so I can catch up with some of the other girls? Is it too late to start competing in dancing? I would be dedicated to practising, but am I too old now?

Also I have nearly done the splits, but I am about 15cm from the floor. I just can't seem to get all the way! What stretches would be good so I can get the whole way down?

1. Some stretches you can do:

Sit with your legs bent, the soles of your feet touching eachother, like a triangle. Try to get it as close to you as you can and push your knees down.

Sit with your legs straight and together. Grab your toes and try to put your head on your knees.

Stand with your legs apart (wide) and bend down as far as you can, keep your back straight and your bottom in.

Sit with your legs straight, together and point, trying to get your toes to the floor.

Caution:: Do not stretch too hard, you might pull a muscle. If you pull a muscle, it'll take a while for it to wear off.

2. It's certainly not too late to start competing!

3. You're not too old!!! I know of a ballerina who started at thirteen. If only i could remember the name... But still, you are NOT too old! Don't let anyone tell you that! You must train hard, though, to catch up to the others. You also might want to invest in some extra lessons.

4. Just keep doing the splits, push yourself hard. Try some of the stretches i listed above.

Good luck! Enjoy your ballet =). But remember, it's tough and you'll need to practise a lot if you want to be the best!

Yay a ballet dancer *hi five* l love ballet, best dance... apart from contemporary.

I belong to another board called. www.dance.net and they have a stretching board on it with lots of ideas for stretching. You being so young and average flexibility I reckon if you spent 20 minutes stretching every day you could get it in 3 months.

Here's a link for a great spilts stretches.

Just remember to warm up before you stretch
lie on your back with one leg straight down on the ground and raise the other leg and pull it down to your face. its the best stretch. if at first you cant reach your foot with the other leg straight bend your underneath leg or use a belt or towel under the arch of the raised foot to pull it down.

hope it helps it did for me.
My dance teacher taught us this stretch at the barre and it is what is helping me achieve the splits.

1) Face your entire body to the barre, feet in first position

2) lift one leg up onto the barre with a batma (bend the leg if needed, but straighten it once on the barre)

3) Turn your body to face opposite the direction that your leg is pointed (if your left leg is on the barre, turn right and face the right wall)

4)Bend your body down to the ground and put both hands on the floor. Now your leg is up on the barre.

5) Have a ballet teacher or friend lift your leg from the barre and push it back so that you are working towards 180 degrees with your legs. Have them hold your leg there for 30 secs. Hold it yourself for as long as you can. Then try your splits.
i'm fourteen and i just started practising goind down in splits last month end.now i'm abt going to touch the ground alr.it is possible.just stretch every day/night and day by day, you can go further down.good luck.but be careful nt to injure your leg muscle
good luck! i am 14 and i have been doing ballet for 11 years. just practice and keep at it! i am sure you will be able to get all the way down in your splits if you just keep stretching. it is never too late to start competing if you work hard and practice a lot you could still compete.
just keep practising
Hey what I found helps with the splits is go as far down as you can and stay there and count to 20 or 30. By doing this your muscles will start to release their grip and you will slowly start to gain progress. And you aren't to old to start dance I new a lady who started at 63 but she wasn't competing, but still your not to old

I hopes this helps you

Before doing anything, do simple stretches on your arms, legs, back, all of your body. Simple stretches you do before PE or any other sport are fine. Then, for flexibility I'd recommend these stretches:

1. Find a blank wall and lay down, pressing your butt against the wall, your legs stright up against the wall. Open your legs as far as you can, and hold it there. It hurts, but it works.

2. Lay on the ground with both feet straight out infront of you. Pull your right leg up and hold for eight counts. Turn your leg out so your foot is pointed to the left. Turn it back in and lift your leg in the air, stretching it the best you can with your back still on the floor. Then, take your leg and take it to your right side as far as you can while keeping both of your hips on the ground (this can be difficult). Repeat this on the left side also.

3. Simple things, touch your toes, sit in butterfly and stretch over, reach towards your toes while stretching, they all add up.

4. Sit in straddle as wide as you can. Stretch to the right, then the left, and then try to touch your head, arms, chest, etc. to the ground. Make sure you pull your knees back or this won't be as effective. You can place your arms under your knees to help with this.
in order to do the splits, i recommend stretching every day. Since youre thinking about ballet, im going to assume you know how to stretch your second position.if you have about a half hour stretch, (almost anything will work as long as you're thourough) then try to down into the splits and hold this for about 10 - 15 seconds, it should help. doing this i was able to do the splits in about 6 weeks
