Hey im starting ballet this year and am just wondering do you have to be skinny to go on pointe?

I weigh 63.7 kilos and my height is 169 cm. I know i'm too old to be a professional ballerina and that it will be a couple of years before i even start pointe.

ps When does a ballet year start ( when should i start?)

No way! I've seen "built" girls do it gracefully.
Theres no set year..you can get started at any time and from what I've seen it is mostly fit women that perform these stunts
Hey, I know how you feel. I hope to start ballet next year, when I'm 14. I would say to start looking for a studio in the Summer, find one that you think is good and afordable, and get regestered. This is done by either phoning the studio or just stopping by. Most take credit cards. In all dance there are to terms. The first goes from about September-December and the second term from about Janruary-May/June. Then, at the end of classes in May/June, you have the choice to be a part of the studio's recital. This allows your friends and family to see how you have progressed. I suggest you go to a studio that does other types of dance (ie. jazz, modern, lyrical, character, hiphop, tap, ect.) as it is usually less expensive then an all ballet school/studio.

As for your wieght/size, usually for professionals the hieght it around 5'3. But, as you stated, you do not want to be professional, so hieght does not matter. And for your wieght, again professionals try to stay tiny, some anorexic. But for recreational dancing, any wieght is fine. Really try to stay flexible. Good luck, and happy dancing!
Professional ballerinas are skinny but that's not what you want to do. So no you do not have to be skinny to be on pointe. You have to have strong calf muscles and good ankles.
No you do not have to be skinny to go on pointe. You just have to have strong ankles and leg muscles...other wise you will not be able to go up on pointe and could hurt your body if your not ready yet. You start ballet whenever you want too start.
you don't even need to be worrying about pointe shoes now... you won't be getting those for a while anyways
no, not really. itd be easier

i was itty bitty when i took ballet so im not quite sure
i have no idea what those turn into in non-metric format, buuuuut you do not have to be skinny to do pointe work.

im proof positive of that!
You don't have to be skinny at all, but you MUST be strong.

There is no specific ballet year, it depends on the particular school and when they're semesters start, but most if not all schools will allow outsiders to start classes at any time during the year. So just go, don't worry about starting on time. The more days that go by, the longer it will take to get where you want to be technically.
