Washing Jazz and Ballet Shoes?

My ballet and jazz shoes are really old and smell... ewww! can i put them in the washing machine and dryer? i'd rather not handwash (:

Cleaning the outside of the shoe, if they are leather, can be done with a Mr Clean Magic Eraser, works great! (I've also used baby wipes and other wipe cleaners).

If they are canvas ballet shoes, put them in the wash on cold--gentle cycle. Don't dry them in the dryer with heat--they'll shrink. Hang them up to dry.

As far as the smell goes, all dancers deal with this one!! I have tried many different things....febreeze them and let them air out outside for a while. I have also used a light mix of rubbing alcohol and water, store bought shoe odor sprays help a bit, and lysol spray isn't too bad either.

There are odor inserts that you can buy and put in your shoes when you are done dancing...the sweat inside your shoes stays there and causes the odors...

honestly, I think your best bet is getting new shoes. you can check out websites such as discountdancewear.com and justforkix.com for wayyy discounted shoes.

but if you are bent on washing, here is what I do. I spray some lysol kitchen cleaner on the leather of the shoes, and rub the dirt off. But if the shoes are canvas, and you dont want to handwash them, then I would use cold water with some gentle detergent, on the most gentle cycle. Then let them air dry
Its not the best idea becuase they are leather and the washing machine can ruin them

you best bet might be just to get new shoes and buy a nice smelling not to strong spray and spray in there everytime after you dance, i do this and it works well
there isn't really any good way to clean ballet and jazz shoes. Your best bet would definitely be to get new shoes. If you can't get new shoes and your just looking to clean them up for recital or a show you could try hand washing them or getting leather cleaner(if they are black) that always works well with my jazz shoes. Good luck
My dance teacher always suggested that we clean our shoes with a little 409 or some type of cleaning supplies like that. Just take a wash cloth and rub it on the shoes. It always worked for me. If they are too bad, though, you may want to consider getting new shoes. I'm not sure about the smell either
It depends on what kind of material is the shoes.

Cavans :Gentle cycle in machine or hand wash. Hang dry after washing

Satin: Use a damp cloth to wipe

Leather: Use non-gel toothpaste. Polish it with leather shoe polish.
